National Whale Centre Launch at Perano Whaling Station, Tory Channel.

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

A few things worth checking out in Picton, Marlborough.

Firstly to tie in with the above video, check out the website for the A World With Whales

Buy a work of art…support the Whale Centre by Barb Speedy.

If you haven’t thought about making a donation as yet here is an opportunity to own a poignant small work by one of New Zealand’s foremost sculptors, Graham Bennett.
A new installation Hard to Swallow (Be Careful not to Cut your Hand on the Tin when Opening) opened in Picton at the Diversion Gallery last week.

The images of the installation and the individual works on the Gallery’s website www.thediversion.co.nz with details on the works and Graham’s concepts on the Current Exhibition page.
It’s great to see the exhibition stopping passersby in their tracks, coming back to have a second look as the myriad of 267 works catch the light, each representing a Minke or Fin whale taken in the Southern Ocean in the 2011-12 season.
Quite a number have sold already which is not surprising given their delicate beauty, and the price being only $267+GST each – the same number as the whales and a fraction of the usual price for Graham’s sculptures. A donation from each sale will go to the newly launched National Whale Centre project www.aworldwithwhales.com
Each sculpture is individually numbered on the back of the lower tin lid, and signed by the artist. We’ve found people tend to have a preference for a particular number or group of numbers from 1 to 267… so I’ve had to map out where they are on the wall to find them easily!!”
Please call Barbara Speedy on 0274 408121 or email  bspeedy@thediversion.co.nz if you would like a particular work or group, and be part of the story the artist is telling.

If at the top of the South Island in New Zealand, we hope you are able to visit the exhibition over the next month… if you are in Picton outside the Gallery’s hours of 12-5pm Weds to Saturday then please call and if she is in town, she would be happy to open up on Sunday, Monday or mornings on request.

Small Business Network : Get Quotes for Your Jobs: Sign up your Business

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Hi guys,

Just wanted to bring your attention to NZTradeNetwork, an online marketing site for small businesses. If you are a small business or someone wanting to find a company to do a job for you, this is the site for you.

Check out the Marlborough Express article today 19th August 2010:

Playing field levelled

Network brings buying power to small businesses

By Michael Berry – The Marlborough Express

“It’s hard out there for the little guy, so it’s time for small businesses to unite and save rather than divide and fall, says a Blenheim entrepreneur.

James Hedley launched NZtradenetwork.co.nz last week to create a network for small businesses to band together for the good of them all.

It was free to join and had about 300 members already, he said.

“It’s growing fast and it’s something that’s been needed in New Zealand for a long time.”

Running a small asphalt driveway company in Blenheim showed him first-hand how difficult it was for small businesses to be competitive and profitable in the face of large nationalised companies, he said.

That struggle sowed the idea in his mind of levelling the playing field.

“There are expenses that most businesses have in common … we negotiate deals with suppliers fortified by our collective strength, then we hand those deals down to the individual businesses giving them huge buying power that no one business could ever achieve.”

A group of small businesses could get the good insurance premiums, the cheaper pricing for materials and other benefits usually the domain of large businesses, he said.

And the larger the network’s membership, the more bargaining power.

“Our main aim is to provide all the advantages to small businesses that big businesses have … buying power, marketing exposure, support, opportunity and networking.”

The network would also be a forum for more business, with members able to support other people in a similar position and post requests for products and services, he said. Members could then bid on doing the job. “As a small guy, you can be the best in your field, but if people don’t know you exist it doesn’t matter.”

Any Kiwi-owned business with a turnover less than $30 million could join the network, he said.

The website would make money from advertising once enough traffic went through it, he said.”

There was also an article in The Sun yesterday

So if you are a small business or a customer, join up! Keep abreast of the latest with NZTradeNetwork Facebook. Of course if you are in Picton or the Marlborough Sounds you should also be on here Picton Marlborough Directory, Picton Juice.
