Live Music at Le Cafe Picton Restaurant

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Hey Guys,

A slightly obvious plug here as Indigo is my daughter, but I am all for promoting live music in Picton, so here goes – on Friday the 9th September at 8pm for the small sum of $5 Indigo Greenlaw will be singing, along with Blair Gibsone, freshly back from Aspen Colorado on lead guitar.  Should be a great night, so beat the winter blues and pop down to your favourite music venue, Le Cafe – awesome food and ambience. :)

Indigo is heading off to Europe again, so this might be the last chance to hear her for a wee while. <3

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Hi guys,

It being a particularly beautiful sun filled winter’s day today, it seems natural to want to spread the word about the glories of Picton.

In case you were wondering what’s happening for Spring Fest here’s a few items for your diary, gleaned from the Love Marlborough website.

Picton Spring Fest is a free, two-day 17/18 September 2011 event featuring Marlborough wine and seafood, hospitality and family activities with entertainment planned to appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

The event will have a main stage with performances from several bands each day, multi cultural entertainment, dancing and other performances and a finale jazz soiree complete with an ice bar. There will also be children’s activities and competitions, along with stall holders offering food/refreshments, arts and crafts, cooking demos, and a strong involvement from the Waikawa Marae. A hive of activity on the foreshore!

It will all get a little groovy on Sunday 18th when the Jazz Soiree begins, headlined by LA Mitchell who with her powerful voice has opened for the likes of Stevie Wonder, Dave Dobbyn and Guy Sebastien. The event will be undercover with a main stage profiling some fantastic Kiwi Bands, multi cultural entertainment, dancing, cooking demos with Celebrity Chefs and a finale Jazz Soiree on the Sunday evening. National performers announced so far are Special Guest Artist Dukes and LA Mitchell .

hese fantastic bands will be supported by some great local acts including Clara Vanwel – the winner of this year’s Marlborough Smoke Free Rockquest who is going through to the National Finals to represent Marlborough.

These bands – along with the other great entertainment planned for the Festival will provide something for everyone!

There will also be children’s activities and competitions, along with The Sample Marlborough Marquees – including wine, seafood, strawberries, honey, oil and other local delights along with other events and activities available in the region. A real sample of Marlborough! There will also be a Festival Bar operated by locals for part of the festival.

All in all a hive of activity on the foreshore.

Celebrating Live Music at Le Cafe

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Hi guys,

Just thought I’d give you Peter’s latest newsletter as he’s the man of the moment after the Marlborough Express article celebrating his involvement in encouraging live music in Marlborough, specifically at Le Cafe, and to let you know about the next upcoming musical offering at Le Cafe tomorrow Wednesday night. So here goes, I give you Peter Schoni:

“Hey folks!
The comments about the beautiful photo in the paper are slowly subsiding – why didn’t the papers turn up 20 years ago, when it could have granted some valuable contacts, when one was fit and indestructible??

Was trying to remember what my father looked like when he was my age. I had left school, into my second year as an apprentice chef, I already knew lots about most things important, was able to judge situations in a grown-up fashion, made mature decisions and generally had a grip on the scene – I was convinced! Also, my socio-political viewpoints were pretty much bang on unlike the majority of politicians and most authoritative powers that were! Funny how it’s actually still the same, aye. My viewpoints are still the closest to the point of just about anyone around, only now I’ve come to realize that that actually applies to most people’s idea about the way forward. Maybe that’s why we argue every now and constantly, us people! Dogs are no better or cats for that matter. Not sure fish fight over ideas or mating rights or whatever….? I know Crayfish are said to be territorially pre-occupied. Only they can re-grow limbs lost in combat- I’ve seen it!!

Anyhow, I was going to tell you about the two stellar instrumentalists that are performing here at LC tomorrow night. Wednesday 25th of May 2011 at 7:30pm

Local Picton Potter Sara Schotanus to exhibit in Nelson

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Hi guys,

It is always wonderful to celebrate the success of our local artists, so I thought I’d bring to your attention an exhibition in Nelson’s Suter Art Gallery Te Arotoi o Whakatu, where local Nelson potters will be showcasing their work. Potters whose work will be featured include : Charles Shaw, Katie Gold, Stephen Robertson, Anna Barnett, Royce Mc Glashen, Picton’s own – Sara Schotanus, Owen Barlett, Sue Newitt and Bruce Hamlin.

The opening is Tuesday 1st March at 5.30pm at the McKee Room in the The Suter Art Gallery Bridge Street Nelson and the exhibition will run from 2nd March through until 20th 2011, so do try and go over the hill at some point to support our local potters.  I had the chance whilst visiting Sara’s pottery gallery at Essons Valley yesterday and she has some beautiful pieces to exhibit.

Sara runs pottery workshops regularly so you may wish to contact her for further details.

Hope to see you at the opening. :)

Dry Firewood: Free Picton Deliveries

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Hi guys,

It’s that time of the year again when I start thinking about preparing for autumn and colder times. We live in an old draughty villa, so our glorious wood stove is our saviour.

I’ve just stacked our first load of wood in our woodshed after a delivery yesterday afternoon – always such a good feeling, maybe something to do with my Scottish birth/heritage, but I love preparing for autumn, my favourite season. Just figured you might like to know of the supplier, as I occasionally hear folk muttering about wet wood deliveries. The wood was dry and the delivery prompt  so without further ado:

Phoenix Firewood: Howard Baker 03 570 5208 Cell:027 644 1553 Free Delivery to Picton.
Pine slabs, blue gum, Old Man Pine and Macrocarpa

In the meantime, let’s enjoy the sunshine and heat of the  summer,

have fun

tika :)
