A slightly obvious plug here as Indigo is my daughter, but I am all for promoting live music in Picton, so here goes – on Friday the 9th September at 8pm for the small sum of $5 Indigo Greenlaw will be singing, along with Blair Gibsone, freshly back from Aspen Colorado on lead guitar.  Should be a great night, so beat the winter blues and pop down to your favourite music venue, Le Cafe – awesome food and ambience.

Indigo is heading off to Europe again, so this might be the last chance to hear her for a wee while. <3

Just thought I’d give you Peter’s latest newsletter as he’s the man of the moment after the Marlborough Express article celebrating his involvement in encouraging live music in Marlborough, specifically at Le Cafe, and to let you know about the next upcoming musical offering at Le Cafe tomorrow Wednesday night. The comments about the beautiful photo in the paper are slowly subsiding – why didn’t the papers turn up 20 years ago, when it could have granted some valuable contacts, when one was fit and indestructible??

Was trying to remember what my father looked like when he was my age. I had left school, into my second year as an apprentice chef, I already knew lots about most things important, was able to judge situations in a grown-up fashion, made mature decisions and generally had a grip on the scene – I was convinced! Also, my socio-political viewpoints were pretty much bang on unlike the majority of politicians and most authoritative powers that were! Funny how it’s actually still the same, aye. My viewpoints are still the closest to the point of just about anyone around, only now I’ve come to realize that that actually applies to most people’s idea about the way forward. Maybe that’s why we argue every now and constantly, us people! Dogs are no better or cats for that matter. Not sure fish fight over ideas or mating rights or whatever….? I know Crayfish are said to be territorially pre-occupied. Only they can re-grow limbs lost in combat- I’ve seen it!!

Anyhow, I was going to tell you about the two stellar instrumentalists that are performing here at LC tomorrow night. Wednesday 25th of May 2011 at 7:30pm

The wind is howling outside, the fan palm by our door is being battered and the draught is cold under the door, all the more reason for something to look forward to, a night out.

On Friday 6th May 2011 at Le Cafe in Picton come and hear two awesome lasses of the New Zealand music scene, Anna Coddington & Julia Deans. They have both played previously at Le Cafe, but this time double the value as they are touring together  “Keepsakes Tour”, which promises to be one of the most enchanting tours of the year.

Julia Deans is surely the possessor of one of modern rocks most interesting voices; able to shift elegantly between soaring falsetto and assured growl. Known primarily as the charismatic front-woman of Fur Patrol, Julia released her debut solo album ‘Modern Fables’ in 2010 to critical acclaim. As well as being a world -class vocal talent, Deans has proven herself as a prolific songwriter, having being recently nominated for both the prestigious Silver Scroll Award and The Taite Music Prize.

Anna Coddington is one of New Zealand’s foremost heroines of independent pop music, as is evident on her debut solo album ‘The Lake’ (one of my favourite albums ever) and new sophomore release ‘Cat & Bird’.  Anna has been quietly kicking around New Zealand’s music scene for some time, fronting casually released pop gems by her former bands Handsome Geoffrey and Duchess and performing with musical collective Fly My Pretties.

Sorry for the silence our home has been filled with a series of travellers/family/couch surfers and I am only just surfacing, what can I say it has been exhausting but such good fun, but to cut to it…. music. On Friday 25th February Pacific Curls are to returning to play live at Le Cafe on London Quay overlooking the wonderful Marlborough Sounds. They have been touring in Canada. Their beautiful vocals with lyrics in Te Reo Maori, Rotuman and English and their unique combination of Scottish fiddle, Taonga Puoro, ukulele, cajon, guitar, klimba and percussion have captivated audiences wherever they have gone.

With its World-ribbed sounds, precise arrangements and a catalogue of songs that link the Pacific’s primal myths to Scotland’s mysticism, Pacific Curls – one Rotuman one Maori and a Scots – make music that is both worldly and enthralling, so come along to Le Cafe and see for yourselves. Planetary shifts afoot, so whilst the planet is shifting its axis and things are changing, what better way to enjoy life than cruising to Le Cafe on Picton’s foreshore for another wonderful musical offering, this time Matt Langley 2010 Apra Award Winner supported by Caitlin Harnett on the Featherbone Tour to release Matt’s new album, Featherbones. They will be playing at 8pm on Saturday 11th December 2010, and Stuart ‘O’ Connor will be playing on 14th December 8.30pm  $10 on the door, so do give Le Cafe a ring to book your table 03 573 5588. Le Cafe also have a new seasonal menu – well worth checking out.

We are back to the delights of Picton after our awesome roadtrip. Good to be home though and the new foreshore development is looking great with fewer fences and getting nearer to completion, it’ll be great to walk through from home to Le Cafe along the new funky wooden pathways through new trees.

So Thursday night 21st October 2010 starting at 7pm for $15 a musical marathon is on offer at Le Cafe, so come on down and enjoy. I’m here to plug an event involving a  friend at one of our favourite haunts, so please excuse the obvious advertising factor!

Kinetics of Stone (check out their tour blog for more info…) will be performing on Wednesday this week 5th August at Le Cafe

There will be a $6 door charge. It’s not often we get the opportunity to see modern dance in Marlborough, so come along and check it out..

The New Zealand Tour 2009 of Kinetics of Stone builds on the exploratory private tour accompanied by a documentary film and photography crew of the top of the South Island that occurred in December of 2006, which emphasized improvisational, responsive dance to Timothy’s large marble sculpture park on location at Forrest Estate Winery in Marlborough, a group of his large works at Lochmara Lodge in the Marlborough Sounds, and a debut performance at Le Cafe of Picton with small works.

Outline of NZ tour 2009:

The formal NZ Tour 2009 begins with improvisational dance throughout Christchurch at over 25 public, yet to be disclosed locations on the day of the 1st of August, captured by documentary photography and film, recording audience responses.

The primary focus of the August 1st work will be to share the creative spirit of KOS with the NZ public at a diverse number of locations including public buildings, cafes and landmarks with an emphasis on brief, spontaneous responsive dance to the given inspirational spaces.

August 2nd is the KOS premier indoor performance at Sumner Community Hall, 5-6:30 pm
Adult tickets $8, Students, Seniors, Children, $4, Door Sales Only

The August 2nd Sumner performance will integrate 20 marble sculptures in a central performance space, opening with an interpretation of playwright Athol Fugard’s seminal work “Bloodknot” and featuring responsive dances to Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech, and an adaptation of Alan Paton’s novel ‘Cry, the Beloved Country’.

On August 4th the group will travel northward and feature a performance at Crossroads Gallery in Cheviot complimenting an exhibition of Alan Brydon Photography and Timothy’s sculpture. Mornings on the tour will be booked with creativity workshops open to community with emphasis on school-aged children.

Locally:

5th August there will be an evening performance at the Waikawa Marae from 6-7pm will be followed by performance at Le Cafe in Picton from 7-8pm.

Forrest Estate Winery will host a unique progressive performance at Timothy’s sculpture park on August 6th from 3:30pm to 4:30 pm involving guest dancers from Marlborough dance schools, performing a five minute choreography accompanied by live music and a food and wine pairing that responds to eight marble sculptures ranging in scale from one to seven tonnes.

and then in Wellington:

Improvisational dance in Wellington at the Botanical Gardens will be documented on film on August 7th, before the group travels to Auckland for a private performance scheduled at the George Street Gallery on the evening of August 8th.

Co-founders Timothy Mark and Elbert Watson merge their respective disciplines of sculpture and dance into an ever-expanding repertoire, drawing on their diverse backgrounds as international educators and artists, introducing audiences to unique choreographies with content spanning theatre, literature, poetry, music, photography, painting, film and beyond.
