Live at Le Cafe Picton – Modern Dance – Kinetics of Stone

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Hi everyone,

I’m here to plug an event involving a  friend at one of our favourite haunts, so please excuse the obvious advertising factor!

Kinetics of Stone (check out their tour blog for more info…) will be performing on Wednesday this week 5th August at Le Cafe

There will be a $6 door charge. It’s not often we get the opportunity to see modern dance in Marlborough, so come along and check it out..

The New Zealand Tour 2009 of Kinetics of Stone builds on the exploratory private tour accompanied by a documentary film and photography crew of the top of the South Island that occurred in December of 2006, which emphasized improvisational, responsive dance to Timothy’s large marble sculpture park on location at Forrest Estate Winery in Marlborough, a group of his large works at Lochmara Lodge in the Marlborough Sounds, and a debut performance at Le Cafe of Picton with small works.

Outline of NZ tour 2009:

The formal NZ Tour 2009 begins with improvisational dance throughout Christchurch at over 25 public, yet to be disclosed locations on the day of the 1st of August, captured by documentary photography and film, recording audience responses.

The primary focus of the August 1st work will be to share the creative spirit of KOS with the NZ public at a diverse number of locations including public buildings, cafes and landmarks with an emphasis on brief, spontaneous responsive dance to the given inspirational spaces.

August 2nd is the KOS premier indoor performance at Sumner Community Hall, 5-6:30 pm
Adult tickets $8, Students, Seniors, Children, $4, Door Sales Only

The August 2nd Sumner performance will integrate 20 marble sculptures in a central performance space, opening with an interpretation of playwright Athol Fugard’s seminal work “Bloodknot” and featuring responsive dances to Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech, and an adaptation of Alan Paton’s novel ‘Cry, the Beloved Country’.

On August 4th the group will travel northward and feature a performance at Crossroads Gallery in Cheviot complimenting an exhibition of Alan Brydon Photography and Timothy’s sculpture. Mornings on the tour will be booked with creativity workshops open to community with emphasis on school-aged children.

Locally:

5th August there will be an evening performance at the Waikawa Marae from 6-7pm will be followed by performance at Le Cafe in Picton from 7-8pm.

Forrest Estate Winery will host a unique progressive performance at Timothy’s sculpture park on August 6th from 3:30pm to 4:30 pm involving guest dancers from Marlborough dance schools, performing a five minute choreography accompanied by live music and a food and wine pairing that responds to eight marble sculptures ranging in scale from one to seven tonnes.

and then in Wellington:

Improvisational dance in Wellington at the Botanical Gardens will be documented on film on August 7th, before the group travels to Auckland for a private performance scheduled at the George Street Gallery on the evening of August 8th.

Anyway I bet it will be awesome, so come along to whichever event you can manage and see for yourselves.

If you are in Picton, do book a table at Le Cafe first and dine prior to the event… great ambiance and food.

Speaking of food, guess I best go and cook tea… dancing on the newly varnished (but dry!) boards…

Goodbye to Oriel Gallery, the very best, so say all of us!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to Hazel Kirkham, Jodie Smith, Lisa Noble and everyone else involved in Oriel Gallery, the wonderful openings with Gusto nibbles and Seresin wine, the awesome art. It’s a huge loss, Picton and the High Street will have a massive hole, it’s the soul food venue for so many people that wander in, either as travellers just venturing through the door to a beautiful open space or locals who return time and again for a hit of art and Jodie’s smiles.

As an exhibiting artist, I have found Hazel to be thoroughly professional, and impeccable with the care of my art, a friend and advisor, and I hope to continue to work with her on other ventures.

I am not alone in feeling bereft at the very thought of Oriel Gallery closing, there are so many people expressing that same deep feeling , it’s so much more than your average gallery.

How I have loved visiting and viewing so many pieces of art, most especially the Daniel Campion pix and many other delights…I will miss it!

There’s a little time left, the last exhibition, Fired Up runs until the 19th April, with some beautiful glasswork from Nelson artists, Frances Woodhead, Lynette Cain and Angela McAlphine. There are some reductions to prices, so be quick whilst stock lasts! Take the time to visit, it’s well worth it.. I believe the gallery will continue in cyberspace as an online gallery, but will keep you posted…

I’m also away for a while, back to the UK, as my grandmother has died, so it’ll be a while until I blog again..

In the meantime, Picton has so much to offer so check out the events, Hannah Howes, another personal favourite is playing at Le Cafe on 25th April, on her new album release tour, so pop along and buy a copy of Candy… someone remind Mouli he promised he’d get me a copy!!

For now,

Tika xx

Tim Guy to play at Le Cafe Picton

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Another fleeting post to remind you that there’s live music at Le Cafe tomorrow night, wednesday 18th March 2009 with Tim Guy, around 8pm start $10 on the door.

“Singer/songwriter Tim Guy is playing a series of intimate shows around New Zealand to promote the first single ‘Coming Up’ from his forthcoming third album. Guy’s solo show combines laidback folk/pop songs and instantly hummable tunes interspersed with his unique brand of storytelling.

Since arriving in New Zealand in 2004, this ex-pat Aussie, now firmly implanted in Auckland has undertaken several national tours garnering a strong reputation with audiences from Kerikeri to Invercargill. As well as touring New Zealand last year (including performances at WOMAD festival), Guy also performed in Spain and Australia. 2009 will see the release of his 3rd album, Big World amongst continuing tours of NZ, Australia and Europe.

The material for Big World was written in a rented villa in the south of Spain and the album is being recorded in Auckland by producer Jeremy Toy (Opensouls, Hollie Smith). ”

So come along, book a table and enjoy the excellent food with wonderful music…… not to mention a beautiful view over the Marlborough Sounds…. spotted a couple of dolphins the other day whilst there having a coffee….blissful. We are so lucky!

oooo and before I forget… a mental note … must blog about Hannah Howes’s new album release tour… she will be playing at Le Cafe on April 25th, so watch this space!

Tika :)
